Sword Apak to set up ‘Tony Papadopoullos Memorial Bursary’ with UWE

Financial systems specialists, Sword Apak, will be awarding a bursary to help support technology students at the University of the West of England (UWE), in Bristol. The donation will be in memory of Tony Papadopoullos, Sword Apak’s founder, who sadly passed away last year.

Sword Apak was founded in 1979, when Tony started the business working from his home, in Bristol. By using his computing expertise, entrepreneurial and commercial acumen, Tony built Sword Apak into an established provider of specialist IT solutions for the finance industry. Today, Sword Apak has offices in Bristol and Hertfordshire, as well as overseas in Canada, Cyprus and Prague. Supporting a worldwide customer base, Sword Apak now boasts a turnover in excess of £11 million.

The memorial fund will provide £2500 per year to UWE’s Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) Faculty. The bursary will be awarded to a young person from a disadvantaged background, with the ability and eagerness to study in the field of Information Systems or Computing, but with financial or other obstacles to overcome.

CEMS Faculty offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses to around 3500 students, studying on both a part-time and full-time basis. Specialist staff support subject areas including: information systems, computer science, electronics, business analysis and statistics, manufacturing, aerospace, music systems, product design and mathematics. All full-time students are encouraged to undertake a placement year in an industrial, commercial or public sector company. This provides them with the opportunity to apply knowledge gained from their course into the ‘work’ environment.

Sword Apak’s CEO, Tony Bracey commented: “By helping IT students at UWE, we feel the memorial bursary is a fitting tribute to Tony, whose commitment to developing new and pioneering technology has been the catalyst for Sword Apak’s achievements.”

Stephen Hoddell, Dean of CEMS Faculty, added: “We welcome the opportunity of working with Sword Apak on the Tony Papadopollous Memorial Bursary and we are confident it will provide a deserving candidate with the opportunity of achieving their goals through higher education. In recent years, Sword Apak has provided placement year opportunities for a number of UWE graduates, many of whom are now employed on a permanent basis. This bursary will further strengthen the relationship between Sword Apak and UWE”.
